Need versus usage

While @longdesc is little used and seldom needed, it seems much more needed than it is used. E.g. such a banal thing as tables presented to the readers in the form of an image, is not at all uncommon in many online publications ... @longdesc could offer a ‘quick fix’ for those examples.
